“It’s okay,” Rowan said, gripping Gabriel’s hand. “It wasn’t your fault.”

“What if he sees—”

“It’s old news, Gabe. It’s been almost two months. We didn’t even know about it. And Laine is watching him,” she said. “Just like before. If anything happens, she’ll tell us.”

“He could have gone to the hospital,” Gabriel whispered. “You weren’t even awake. He could have taken me.”

“But he didn’t,” Rowan said.

“He still could.”

“He won’t,” she said firmly. “I promise.”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive,” Rowan said, leaning back on the arm of the couch. “It’s after midnight,” she added. “I want you to get some sleep.”

“I’m not going to be able to sleep.”

“Just try.” Rowan reached for her blanket. “I can’t wait until I can go back to my own bed,” she said, pulling it over her shoulders. “It’s lonely down here at night.”

“Do you want me to stay with you?”

“No, no, you won’t be comfortable.”

“Yes I will. Please?”

“I guess so. Go get your pillow.”

Gabriel ran upstairs, and Rowan lay back, listening to the tinkling melody of her butterfly wind chimes on the porch. It was a nice night, but the windows weren’t open—they were locked. Everything was. The security company had finished up before dinnertime; it didn’t take them long to upgrade the system and install surveillance cameras inside and out. Rowan and Celia’s phones were linked to every single one—if so much as a bird flew by, they would know about it.

Gabriel came back down and settled himself on the other end of the couch, burrowing under his own blanket. She was glad he thought it was his idea. They’d both sleep better. “Good night,” he said.

Rowan clicked off the light. “Good night.”
